Celebrated musician, producer, curator and professor King Britt has long been a pivotal figure in placing his hometown on the global electronic music map. As a tribute to his local roots, he curated BLACKTRONIKA: Philadelphia Now and Then, a weeklong series of performances, workshops, and discussions. Jazz Times spotlighted the project's jazz roots:

“That meant Sun Ra and all things Arkestral as Blacktronika’s very foundation,” notes Britt. “That also meant jazz fusion and, from Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew with Betty Davis’s influence, through to Herbie Hancock starting with Mwandishi then Head Hunters and “Rockit.” Of course, there is Chick [Corea] and Return to Forever. If we’re looking at an alternative to what was The Sound of Philadelphia and Gamble & Huff, there is also the lush science fiction–based electronic sounds of Dexter Wansel’s Life on Mars album.”
